Project Overview

John’s Forest is a private residential landscape design project in the Edgewood neighborhood of Atlanta, GA. Formerly an eroded turf grass hillside, MRS used the principles of ecological design to create an environmentally contributing landscape that is nearly 100% pervious, while balancing out the client’s (a local chef’s) desire for a high-end luxurious landscape made to entertain.

Ecological Elements

  • 100% pervious surfaces

  • biodiverse and predominantly native plants

  • habitat considerations via bird feeders, pollinator plants, trees

  • reforest site with the use of several new trees

  • sustainable black locust hardwood used

  • no irrigation system installed

  • low maintenance and drought tolerant plants used

  • slope stabilization and soil treatments

Entertainment Elements

  • custom bar and Argentine grill (stone, black locust

    concrete)

  • year-round interest in plantings

  • custom designed sustainable lumber table and bench set for 10 (black locust)

  • lighting design for night use

  • several outdoor rooms for dining, lounging, games, and fire
